I have always been intrigued by Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings. I learnt that the master would use the famous red chalk to create sketches that would later be transferred (rubbed on to) cathedral walls then painted in his inimitable style. Artists of the day also frequently used ground animal bone mixed with water and alum to coat paper to allow silver stylus marks to leave delicate lines which became darker as time wore on. I love the delicacy of the line and the restraint one must use to achieve the layering results.
These are my sketches of ladies of a bygone era. All are A5 size, coated with Ground and using copper, silver and gold stylus.
