Two years ago I sketched out my first idea for what was to become an all-encompassing project: The Zodiac Woman Series.
I was doodling one day and out popped a very lively dancer: Libra was born. I thought to myself, I could make something out of this!
Librans are known for their balanced outlook on life, so, expanding on the scales symbology, I saw her as an Almeh, an Arabian dancer practiced in he art of singing and reciting classical poetry. Hanging from each arm are gold pans full of sapphires, attached to gold chains. She is adorned with jewels and wears a traditional dancer’s costume. She is so nimble and lithe, as she dances freely, with sensuous movent.
A bit about the process
Challenging myself to come up with the remaining 11 Zodiac star signs, I spent weekends sketching out ideas and then drawing them on to A1 paper in the ‘tondo’ (round) format. I wanted to go beyond the normal stereotypical astrological symbols in this series. For example, Cancer is often shown with claw hands. Instead, I visualised my version of Cancer, standing in the evening light near the beach, offering up a pearl to the Moon Goddess, with her little crab friends basking in the dusky glow.
I also hid symbols in each drawing; for example, the stars in the sky are the true constellations for each sign. Other symbols are hidden in clothing or worked into jewellery. The viewer finds little tricks and stories in each drawing.
These hand-drawn posters include the birthstone and flower for each sign as well as a bit about the strengths and weaknesses. All printed on high quality giclee paper.
